MDF Goes Beyond
USPS vs UPS
One of our clients was sending out customer orders through the Post Office using Standard (bulk) mail, thinking that it would save money. Because a lot of the packages were over 1 lb. in weight, the orders were going out Parcel Post (which was restructured in the last rate increase to include zone differentials in the lower weight class). MDF's Client Services Rep, contacted UPS and met with a representative. Together they worked up the savings that the client could get by changing to UPS Ground. In addition to the savings, the package gets delivered faster with accurate tracking.
Standard vs 1st Class
One of our clients was sending out a large mailing using First Class, in order to "clean up" their database. There was no time sensitive information in the mailing, so that Standard (bulk) mailing could have been a less expensive option, except for the address corrections.
The MDF Rep suggested sending the mailer out Standard rate, but adding an endorsement below the return address (Return service requested). This would route all incorrect or outdated addresses back to the return address (MDF in this case) for updating in the database. The client paid the 1st class rates only for those that were returned, which was significantly less expensive than paying 1st class for all addresses.
List Rental
A retail client of ours was sending out a sale notice to all of their customers within the radius of one of their store locations. MDF suggested using a rental list to supplement their mailing, and target only the high income clients, since they sold a high-end product. The Sale started on a week-end, and only those who received the mailer were aware of the pre-sale. The first day, more than 40% of their inventory was sold, and most of the people attending the pre-sale were non-customers. By the time of the actual sale date, they had to import product from different store locations to keep up with the demand. The client was so thrilled with the results that they incorporate rental lists whenever possible.
